 NEOMEN Research Committee
Proposed Goals and Objectives

Goal I: To perform a membership research needs assessment and submit a report to the Executive Committee at the May 2001 meeting.
A. Identify current human, academic, research, and technological resources within each district, institution, and residency program;
B. Identify current residency program scholarly activities (required and elective);
C. Identify current membership needs and requests;
D. Evaluate needs assessment and make recommendations to the Executive Committee.

Goal II: Hire a Director of Research (or Research Education) to coordinate research activities within NEOMEN and to supervise district research curricula. (see comment 1)

Goal III: Establish an office of Grants Coordination to identify projects suitable for grant applications and sources of funding, and to assist local and district membership in grant writing. (see comment 1)

Goal IV: Establish a NEOMEN Research Forum (spring 2002?).
A. Establish a review committee to write protocol and standards, and to review abstracts for the Annual Research Day;
B. Establish a planning and coordination committee (1 member from each district?) to plan and advertise local and OPTI-wide fora.

Goal V: Develop formal communication mechanisms, eg. newsletter and page on NEOMEN web site, discussing and advertising all faculty and resident research efforts.

Goal VI: Establish a speakers' bureau. (see comment 2)

Comments:

1. (Goal 2) The Director of Research Education should be a full time, fully-funded faculty position. The position can be based on campus (because the director will work closely with the Executive Director) or can be based at a membership institution (because the position requires extensive, ongoing travel within the 3 districts). The position would be paid with OPTI funds or a combination of OPTI and COM funds (if there are pre-doctoral responsibilities, either on campus or at the CTCs). The subcommittee felt strongly that this should be a well-funded position to encourage someone to take it as their primary (sole?) position. The director, who will work with the content experts at each institution, should have formal education/degree in research (i.e. Ph.D.). The grants coordination responsibilities (Goal 3) may be incorporated into the Director of Research Education position or may be shared by this position and the Executive Director.

2. (Goal 6) The speakers' bureau may be established in conjunction with the program committee. The research committee will identify speakers for research-related topics.
